Great Smokey Mountain National Park
Clingmans Done is the most western part of the Mountains to Sea Trail that runs through the state of North Carolina. The Appalachian Trail also runs through this point making it a busy central hub for two major trail systems as well as an excellent view point of the Smokey Mountains. On a clear day, you see over a 100 miles out and view seven states:Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama.
So is Clingmans Dome family friendly? Yes! But you do need to have those kiddos prepared! It’s only about a half mile from the parking lot to the top of the dome, but it’s a steep little incline that will sneak up on you! Toting kids up the hill can take a while depending on their age.
Bring water!!! I cannot tell you how many times I’ve given an extra water bottle to a stranger because they were not prepared for the effort it would take to make it to the top. Wear closed toed shoes and something with support. Full disclosure, there is wildlife up there and that includes snakes and some big bugs. If you are going in the spring or summer when it’s warm, make sure you bring bug spray. There are honey bees there because of the abundance of wildflowers. If you leave them alone, they will leave you alone. They are busy at work and wonderful to watch….from a distance.
The visitors center is located at the parking lot near the bathrooms. The forestry people there are always very pleasant and willing to answer questions. I recommend you make sure everyone uses the bathroom before you start the trek up the hill because it can be an hour to two hour long trip depending on how fast you all walk and how much time you spend at the top. Take the time to get lots of pictures and take in the breathtaking views.
This trail is ADA accessible and stroller friendly. This trail is not pet friendly unless you have a service dog. If you do, make sure you pack water for that pup because they will need it too!
This is definitely a must see spot if you are visiting the Smokies! Just know you’ll get your steps in and cardio for the day!
